FAQs

Here are some questions we often get:

Woodwind, brass, and percussion players are all welcome. We have musicians from all walks of life, and all ages between 17 and 70. (Members under 18 require parental consent).

Nothing! Unlike many bands, we don't charge a subscription or membership fee, and your uniform is provided free-of-charge.

Members are expected to attend 80% of the rehearsals and performances throughout the year.

Definitely not! There are currently some ex-military musicians, but we are a civilian volunteer band with close ties to the 48th Highlanders of Canada regimental family.

There is a large variety of skill levels within the Band. We suggest, as a minimum, a high school level of musicianship with the ability to read music at a school Grade 11 proficiency.

No. The 48th Highlanders Regiment has a separate Pipes and Drums which is a serving military ensemble. We occasionally play with the regiment's Pipes and Drums, or feature a solo piper, but most of the time, we're just a concert wind band with a wide repertoire: music from movies, musicals, and TV; pop; light classics; jazz; and (of course) marches. You name it, we can play it!

The band rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Moss Park Armoury in Downtown Toronto (Queen and Jarvis)

Click the "Join Us"  button below. You will be contacted to attend a rehearsal. You will have the opportunity to play with the Band over four sessions before committing.

Not at all, almost all our engagements are concert-type events but occasionally we need to do a small march. If you can’t march because of health issues, we certainly won’t expect you to, and no one is going to force you. If you can’t march because you don’t know how, we’ll happily teach you. And, if you play an instrument that’s hard/impossible to march with, we’ll accommodate that, too.
